On Saturday 4th March 2023, Warminster Scout Group entered an amazing five teams into the Scout and Guide organised Monopoly Run Live 23. The event is based on the traditional board game and takes place in London’s city centre.

Warminster Scouts and Explorers were among 1,400 teams from across the UK, representing nearly 8,000 members of the Scout and Guide Associations. 35 excited Scouters (including some slightly older leaders!) left Warminster by coach at 6.15am. After picking up a late riser en route, the teams arrived in Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank in plenty of time for a comfort break and to plan their strategy before the game began at 10.00am.

This year the event had three different start times: Groups set off at 9.30am, 9.45am and 10.00am, in 200 separate mini-games to reduce congestion, and ensure that the game play app didn’t crash.

As 10.00am approached, the Warminster teams set off on the first mad dash to secure the properties which would generate the bulk of the teams’ income for the day.

The Warminster Group Scout Leader, Russ Cane said, “All five teams had a fantastic day. The independence to go around London in a small group taught them a huge amount about what there is in London, and also how to create and plan their own routes, using public transport and on foot.

The competition ended at 5.30pm. All teams made their way back to Jubilee Gardens for the 7.00pm coach back to Warminster, arriving home safe and sound at 10.00pm.

Scouting is all about everyday adventure, giving unique opportunities to young people. This event was the first time in central London for some of our young people.

The Scouts and Explorers experienced sights and famous places, whilst navigating around the capital. The London Monopoly Run Live is just one example of the wide range of activities undertaken by Scouts in Warminster.

Not only was the competition a fantastic day out for all who attended, but it also helped the young people to develop teamwork, leadership and independence, developing skills for life.

Nature and the outdoors are languages that can be learned. Once you identify a beech tree, tie a clove hitch or cook a simple meal over a fire that you’ve built yourself, you’ll never forget it.'
