The Young Leader Scheme: Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders

Explorer Scout Young Leaders are Explorers who volunteer alongside adult leaders in a Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop. They’re a valuable asset to any leadership team and play an active role in the section, bringing a range of fresh ideas to the table and acting as positive role models for the young people they work alongside.

Aimed at individuals aged 14 to 18, the scheme provides valuable opportunities for personal development, skills enhancement, and meaningful engagement with younger members of the Scout group.

What is the Young Leader Scheme?

The Young Leader Scheme offers young people the chance to take on leadership responsibilities within their local Scout group, working alongside adult leaders to plan and deliver a wide range of activities and events. From organising games and challenges to leading discussions and workshops, young leaders play a crucial role in shaping the scouting experience for their peers.

Key Components of the Scheme:

  1. Training and Support: Young leaders receive comprehensive training and ongoing support to help them develop the skills and confidence needed to excel in their roles. Training modules cover topics such as leadership, communication, teamwork, and child protection, equipping young leaders with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed.
  2. Hands-On Experience: Through hands-on experience and practical involvement in scouting activities, young leaders have the opportunity to put their skills into action and make a real difference within their Scout group. Whether it’s mentoring younger members, assisting with badge work, or leading outdoor adventures, young leaders play an active role in the day-to-day operations of the group.
  3. Personal Development: Participating in the Young Leader Scheme fosters personal growth and development in young people, helping them build confidence, resilience, and leadership abilities. By stepping into leadership roles and taking on responsibility, young leaders learn valuable life skills that will serve them well in the future, both within and outside of scouting.
  4. Recognition and Achievement: As young leaders progress through the scheme and gain experience, they have the opportunity to earn awards and recognition for their achievements. From the Young Leader Belt and Wood Badge to the Queen’s Scout Award, the scheme offers a range of accolades that celebrate the dedication and contributions of young leaders.

Benefits of the Young Leader Scheme:

  • Leadership Development: The scheme provides young people with hands-on experience in leadership, helping them develop essential skills such as communication, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • Personal Growth: Participating in the scheme fosters personal growth and self-confidence, empowering young leaders to overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
  • Mentoring Opportunities: Young leaders have the chance to mentor and inspire younger members of the Scout group, making a positive impact on their lives and fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.
  • Preparation for the Future: The skills and experiences gained through the Young Leader Scheme prepare young people for future success, both within scouting and beyond, by equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in a variety of settings.
