War Memorial Work Day 2023

Date: 8th Oct 2023 Author: Daniel Meadow

The garden behind Warminster War Memorial has now undergone a drastic restoration to bring it back to its former glory. Over the past 2 years young people from the town have been aiding the Warminster Royal British Legion (RBL) with the project and Saturday was the 2nd turn of the Scouts.

After a highly successful day last year which saw the initial erection of 2 bunkers in a sanded area as well as the laying of a new wall and a lot of shrubbery clearing and de-weeding, we returned this year to find the bunkers in a ruin due to unsociable activity around the town. This didn’t affect morale though as those who attended were eager to get involved in any way they could.

After the safe removal of some barbed wire, most scouts began to clear the shrubbery that had built up through the year. Meanwhile, those few who felt a bit stronger started filling what would be the first of an awful lot of sandbags. As the sandbags slowly filtered from the sand and cement mixing station to the bunkers and sandbag wall the first look at the revitalised garden began to be seen.

After the last of the vegetation had been cleared and the bunkers now fully rebuilt (as well as the erection of a 3rd one) work could start on laying a membrane to lay woodchip around the metal posts and then the installation of a safe ‘barbed ‘ fence

All in All another highly successful work day for the scouts, Well done to all in attendance.
