On Saturday 5 March 2022, Warminster Scout Group entered four teams into the first Scouting Monopoly Run to take place in London since the start of the pandemic. They were among 900 teams from across the UK, representing nearly 5,500 members of the Scout and Guide Associations.
Based upon the traditional board game, an early start saw 18 intrepid youngsters (plus some slightly older leaders!) arriving at Jubilee Gardens in time to plan their strategy before the game began at 0930hrs. They soon set off on the first mad dash to secure the properties which would generate the bulk of the teams’ income for the day.
The Warminster Group Scout Leader, Russ Cane said, “All four teams had a fantastic day. The independence to go around London in a small group taught them a huge amount about what there is in London but also how to create and plan their own routes, using public transport and on foot.
Scouting is all about everyday adventure, giving unique opportunities to young people. This was the first time in central London for a number of our young people. They experienced seeing the sights and famous places, whilst navigating around the capital. The London Monopoly Run is just one example of the wide range of activities undertaken by scouts in Warminster.
Not only was the competition a fantastic day out for all who attended, but it also helped the young people to develop key skills in teamwork, leadership and independence developing skills for life.”
